Earlier this year Tenfold member Aspire CBS won at the national finals of the Great British Care Awards 2018 when one of their support workers, Jack Homer, took the trophy for Newcomer of the Year. Now they’ve backed this success up with another win, this time in the All-England finals of the Learning Disability and Autism Awards in the ‘Sporting Chance’ category.
About Aspire CBS
Aspire Community Benefit Society is a social enterprise which provides care and support services to approximately 1,000 adults with a learning disability in Leeds. Aspire’s purpose is to enhance the quality of the lives of the people they support by empowering them to be as independent as possible. Aspire puts citizenship at the heart of the organisation, supporting people to make the most of their strengths and play an active part in the communities in which they live.
Aspire has successfully embedded sporting opportunities and physical activities into their day services in recent years and now lead the way in delivering large-scale events for the benefit of the wider community of adults with a learning disability across Leeds. This has been achieved by co-locating their community bases within sports centres, establishing and building strong working partnerships with other organisations and using this as a springboard for proactively engaging staff in supporting and inspiring people to get active.
Everything from aquarobics to Zumba including belly dancing, cricket, football, golf, rugby and triathlons has been tried. By extending the variety of opportunities available people have achieved some fantastic results including substantial weight losses, improved fitness and well-being and increased self-confidence.
At the awards ceremony in June 2018 held in Birmingham the judges said:
“Aspire has shown how complete transformation of service is possible with complete community inclusion, with excellent results”.
So well done to Aspire on another fantastic win!
