Leeds Mencap is ready to recruit new learners for its Supported Internship Programme, which will hopefully start in September.

The Supported Employment service provides young people aged 16-25 with the opportunity to start or continue their journey to employment. All learners on the course have personalised learning plans and a dedicated caseworker to support them from start to finish.

The course requires all learners to complete 300 hours of classroom sessions and 300 hours of work experience.  Therefore, learners will attend taught sessions 2 days a week then ideally, have a placement starting at one day a week and building up to more days as their confidence increases.

The caseworkers and tutors can also provide the following personalised support for learners:

  • Travel Training
  • In work job coaching
  • Personalised learning plan
  • Life skills training
  • Self-care and independence.
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English.

They also ensure all the employers have the opportunity to gain disability awareness training and are supported to help them gain confidence at supporting someone with learning disabilities in a working environment.

If you know someone who is aged between 16 and 25 and has an EHCP who may be interested, contact Sophie Ellis, Caseworker – Supported Internships: [email protected]
