Highlights from the Prime Minister’s briefing on Saturday are as follows:

  • National lockdown for England will be introduced, and is expected to start from 0001 Thursday for a month.
  • All early years and education settings are expected to remain open, although there may be a push to move HE/FE provision for older students online.
  • All non-essential businesses to close (retail, hospitality, leisure, entertainment, close contact).
  • If you need to be at a workplace (e.g. construction, manufacturing and essential public services) then this will be allowed, but otherwise people should work from home. The housing market will continue.
  • There will be a ban on all household mixing except for outdoor pursuits such as exercise, walking, sitting on benches and visiting playgrounds – in which case you can do these with your household or one other person and minimise travel
  • It is not planned that the NHS will revert to a ‘covid only’ approach, and will continue with priority/critical elective surgeries as far as possible.
  • At the end of the month of lockdown restrictions, de-escalation will take place on a local/regional basis with areas moving back into the tiering system depending on the data. Details to be confirmed with reviews expected towards the end of November.
  • Headlines about the new furlough schemes are contained in this link.

The key messages reinforced by Leeds City Council continue to be:

  • Make space and stay 2m away from people you do not live with;
  • Wash your hands regularly and for 20 seconds;
  • Cover your face in enclosed spaces; and
  • Isolate when you need to/are advised to, and getting a test if you have symptoms
  • Follow all relevant rules and guidance and encourage others to.
