Community organisations across Leeds can access a range of free workshops from the British Red Cross, designed to build confidence, strengthen community resilience and help people respond to emergencies.

Delivered by the British Red Cross Community Education team, the workshops cover practical topics including first aid, flooding, climate resilience and supporting young people. Sessions can be tailored to the needs of individual organisations and community groups.

Helping communities prepare for emergencies

The workshops aim to give people the knowledge and confidence to respond safely during emergency situations while helping organisations strengthen resilience within their communities.

Topics currently available include:

  • First Aid – practical skills to help someone in an emergency, including an introduction to using a defibrillator.
  • Climate – Flood: Aware, Prepare, Care – understanding flood risk, the impact on local communities and how to prepare for and respond to flooding.
  • Coping with Challenges – supporting young people to build resilience and manage difficult situations.
  • Empathy and Migration – helping young people explore migration through empathy, understanding and discussion.

Sessions are delivered in an informal, interactive way and can be adapted to suit different audiences and community settings.

Supporting local resilience

The new Climate – Flood: Aware, Prepare, Care workshop is currently being piloted and is particularly relevant for organisations involved in neighbourhood resilience, community preparedness and local resilience hubs.

Participants will explore:

  • Different types of flooding.
  • Local flood risks.
  • How flooding can affect people and communities.
  • Practical steps individuals and organisations can take to prepare.

With climate-related events becoming more frequent, understanding how communities can prepare and respond is becoming increasingly important.

Practical first aid skills for everyone

The British Red Cross first aid workshop is suitable for anyone who wants to build their confidence in responding to an emergency.

The session includes:

  • Recognising emergency situations.
  • Simple first aid techniques.
  • A demonstration of how to use a defibrillator.
  • Opportunities for participants to practise their skills.

The workshops are designed to be accessible, practical and suitable for people with no previous first aid experience.

Tailored for your organisation

Workshops can be delivered to community groups, charities, voluntary organisations and other local organisations.

The British Red Cross can tailor sessions to meet the needs of different audiences and has already worked with a range of organisations and schools across West Yorkshire.
