West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) has announced plans to make stations across our region more accessible and inclusive for all rail users. Working in partnership with Northern Trains, the Rail Accessibility Package aims to ensure every passenger can travel safely, confidently, and comfortably—no matter their access needs.
What the project involves
As part of the Access for All programme, WYCA will upgrade facilities across 22 rail stations in Bradford, Calderdale, Leeds and Wakefield during the first phase of work. Improvements could include:
-
Accessible toilets and baby change facilities
-
Braille station maps and handrails with tactile markings
-
Help points, induction loops, and accessible signage
-
Improved seating and pathways
-
Anti-slip surfaces and better lighting
The initiative supports the ambition of the new Weaver Network—a unifying brand for transport in West Yorkshire—launched earlier this year to make travel simpler and easier to navigate.
Which stations are included
The first phase of the programme covers 22 stations, including Horsforth, Garforth, Halifax, Bradford Interchange, Shipley, Burley Park, and Wakefield Kirkgate. You can see a full list and an interactive map on the Your Voice website.
Why accessibility matters
Making rail travel inclusive benefits everyone. Accessible stations don’t just improve journeys for disabled passengers—they also support older people, families with young children, and anyone travelling with luggage or mobility challenges.
These improvements are designed to:
-
Encourage more people to choose rail travel
-
Improve access to work, education, and health services
-
Enhance comfort and safety at every stage of the journey
Community voices and next steps
The project is currently developing its full business case, expected to be submitted by the end of 2025. If approved, works are planned to begin in early 2027, finishing by summer 2028.
Community feedback remains vital to shaping this work. Local residents, including Horsforth parents and carers, have already shared experiences highlighting how Changing Places facilities and accessible design can make a life-changing difference. WYCA and Northern have confirmed that while hoists are not part of the first-phase specification, they may be considered in future improvements.
