A new research project led by the University of Sheffield and Leeds Beckett University is exploring how to strengthen professional and wellbeing support for staff working in health and wellbeing roles across the VCSE sector. The study is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

The research team is looking for VCSE organisations and people with lived experience of VCSE services to help shape the work.

About the study

“Supporting the VCSE Paid Workforce: An Action Research Study” aims to understand what helps VCSE employees stay well at work and remain in their roles. This includes staff such as Social Prescribing Link Workers, Health and Wellbeing Coaches, Care Coordinators, Community Development Workers and Youth Workers.

Ways to take part

Join an Action Group
Two action groups (West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire) will bring together VCSE staff, managers, commissioners, infrastructure organisations and service users. Members will help guide the research and co-design support approaches.

  • Around eight online or occasional in-person meetings over two years

  • £50 per meeting for VCSE staff and service users

  • Two wider stakeholder events included

Become a Participating Organisation
The team is looking for six VCSE organisations (three in West Yorkshire, three in South Yorkshire) to partner in the study. These organisations will work with researchers to design and test new support approaches for their staff.

  • £1,000 honorarium for each selected organisation

  • An opportunity to learn more about current support systems and trial new ideas

What the study involves

The project will run in three phases:

  1. Understanding staff experiences and existing support

  2. Co-designing and trying out new approaches

  3. Reviewing what worked and the impact on staff wellbeing

Benefits of taking part

For Action Group members: influence the research, share local insight, build networks and strengthen your CV.
For organisations: improve staff recruitment and retention, develop stronger support practices and contribute to national learning about the VCSE workforce.
