As colder weather continues, having somewhere warm, welcoming and safe to spend time can make a real difference. Welcome Spaces are free places across Leeds where people can gather, enjoy a warm environment, and spend time in comfort — without any expectation to spend money.
Welcome Spaces are designed to be simple and accessible. They offer a place to sit, read, study, meet others or just take a break from the cold. Many venues also provide hot drinks, activities, and free Wi-Fi, alongside friendly staff and volunteers.
This winter, a network of Welcome Spaces is being delivered across Leeds in partnership with voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations. Locations include libraries, community centres, community hubs, and other trusted local venues. Each space offers a warm, friendly and safe environment where people can comfortably spend time.
Importantly, Welcome Spaces are free to use for anyone. There is no referral needed and no requirement to take part in activities. People can drop in, stay for as long as they need, and use the space in a way that works for them.
For many people, Welcome Spaces are about more than warmth. They can help reduce isolation, provide routine, and offer gentle social connection — particularly for people who may be feeling the impact of rising living costs, loneliness, or reduced access to heated spaces during the day.
For VCSE organisations, Welcome Spaces can also play a practical role in wider support. They are a place where:

Because venues vary, what’s available at each Welcome Space may differ. Some offer scheduled activities or additional services alongside the space itself, while others focus on providing a calm, quiet environment. All are united by the same core offer: a warm, safe place to spend time for free.
