Pyramid, a Leeds-based arts organisation supporting artists with learning disabilities and autism, is currently presenting an artistic response at Leeds Art Gallery as part of the wider celebration of the work of John Atkinson Grimshaw.

The exhibition, Pyramid View On… John Atkinson Grimshaw, brings together artwork created and curated by Pyramid member artists, inspired by Grimshaw’s distinctive nocturnal scenes and his exploration of the transition from dusk to night. The work is exhibited in the Artspace at Leeds Art Gallery and runs until April 2026, alongside the major gallery exhibition Don’t Let’s Ask For The Moon…: Nocturnes and Atkinson Grimshaw.

As part of the exhibition programme, Pyramid artists have been delivering accessible, participatory workshops in the gallery, inviting visitors to engage creatively with the themes of the exhibition and explore Grimshaw-inspired ideas through making and discussion.

In January, Pyramid marked the exhibition with a celebration event led by the Visioning Group, held at Leeds Art Gallery as part of International Day of Disabled People activity. The event welcomed adults with learning disabilities, carers, support organisations and members of the public to take part in free, inclusive creative activities and spend time engaging with the artwork.

Reflecting on the event, Rosie, a member of the Pyramid Visioning Group, said: “It’s exciting and encouraging to see so many people engaging with our artwork and workshops at our International Day of Disabled People event last week. It was great to see different organisations learn more about Pyramid and the work we do.”

James, also a Visioning Group member, highlighted the importance of visibility and recognition, saying: “People looked intrigued in the workshops and artwork. It was good to see people in the space for this event, it means Pyramid is getting the recognition we deserve.”

You can read more about the Visioning Group celebration event, including details of the activities that took place, in this blog post.

Earlier in December, Pyramid also held its AGM at Leeds Art Gallery, highlighting the role of cultural spaces in supporting visibility, recognition and celebration for learning disabled and autistic artists. That event is covered in this blog post.

Together, the exhibition, AGM and celebration events demonstrate the value of sustained partnership working between Pyramid and Leeds Art Gallery, and the impact of creating inclusive opportunities for artists to share their work with wider audiences.
