This is how we do it: Canopy Housing Guide to Retrofit launch
For almost 30 years, Canopy Housing has been working with volunteers from the local community to bring empty homes back into use. Their approach is practical, people-led and rooted in social value, combining housing, skills development and community action.
Over that time, more than 1,000 volunteers have been involved in Canopy projects. Many have taken part through the self-help model, where people experiencing housing need work alongside volunteers and move into the homes they help to renovate. Along the way, participants gain skills, confidence and experience, while homes are improved to high environmental standards.
On Wednesday 25 February 2026, Canopy is inviting people to Imagine Leeds to celebrate and launch the Canopy Housing Guide to Retrofit.
About the event
This is an interactive, drop-in session where people can learn more about Canopy’s award-winning self-help community retrofit approach. The afternoon will be informal and welcoming, with space to share ideas, ask questions and get hands-on.
Canopy uses natural materials such as wood fibre, sheep’s wool and lime plaster, and works to high standards across its retrofit projects. Volunteers learn green building and teamworking skills on live construction sites, supporting both environmental outcomes and personal development.
The event will include food to share, opportunities to plant seeds, creative activities and workshops. There will also be conversations about the Canopy Guides and how they are used in practice.
What you’ll learn about
During the session, Canopy will share learning from its work, including:
-
how Canopy got to where it is today
-
how retrofit projects are funded
-
how sites are run as transformational, educational spaces
-
how the self-help model works in practice
-
why Canopy retrofits in the way it does
-
plans for tackling fuel poverty
There will be space for tenants to pick up guides on maintaining their homes and get advice, as well as time for informal conversations with the Canopy team.
Hard copies of the guides will be available for those who arrive early. Digital versions of the guide can also be accessed online.
