A free programme of health equity training is available for colleagues working across health and social care in Leeds, helping people better understand health inequalities and develop practical ways to create fairer access to services and support.

Delivered through the Fairer Healthier Leeds programme and Leeds Health and Care Academy, the training is designed to support colleagues at all levels, from frontline staff through to leaders and service managers.

Why Health Equity Matters

Not everyone has the same opportunity to live a long and healthy life.

Factors such as income, housing, employment, ethnicity, disability and access to services can all influence health outcomes. Health equity focuses on understanding these differences and taking practical action to reduce unfair barriers to good health.

This training programme helps participants understand how health inequalities affect people across Leeds and explores ways individuals, teams and organisations can help create a fairer and healthier city.

Four Levels of Learning

The programme offers a range of learning opportunities depending on your role and experience.

Level 1: Health Equity Essentials

A short online learning module featuring a nine-minute animation, knowledge check and certificate of completion.

Participants will learn:

  • What health inequalities are
  • Which groups are more likely to experience them
  • How Leeds is working towards health equity
  • Simple actions that can help make health fairer for everyone

This is a good starting point for anyone wanting to build their understanding of health equity.

Level 2: Health Equity in Public-Facing Roles

This in-person training day is aimed at colleagues who regularly work with members of the public.

The session explores how health inequalities can affect people’s experiences and provides practical skills to help staff have confident conversations and support individuals more effectively in everyday interactions.

Level 3: Health Equity in Leadership and Management

Designed for leaders and managers, this training focuses on how health equity can be embedded within services, workplaces and organisational culture.

Participants will explore practical actions that can improve access, experiences and outcomes for the people and communities they serve.

Level 4: Service Improvement

A bespoke offer for teams, services and pathways looking to explore health equity within their own area of work.

This opportunity supports organisations to identify challenges, develop solutions and embed equitable practice across teams, services and partnerships.
