As the colder weather sets in and the run-up to Christmas begins, many families in Leeds may start to feel the strain of rising costs and money worries. For some, that pressure can make illegal money lenders — loan sharks — seem like a quick fix. In reality, they trap people in cycles of debt and fear.

Stop Loan Sharks is urging community organisations, faith groups and local services across Leeds to help raise awareness of the risks of borrowing from unlicensed lenders, and to share clear information about the help that’s available. By talking openly about the warning signs, we can prevent harm before it happens.

If you’re not sure how to start the conversation, our earlier feature on [knowing the warning signs of a loan shark – insert link here] explains what to look out for and how to report concerns safely. Stop Loan Sharks has also produced a wide range of resources translated into more than 20 languages [insert link here], making it easier to reach people in every community across Leeds.

To make contact even easier, victims can now reach the team through a confidential WhatsApp line. Details, including the number and guidance for professionals, are available [insert link here]. You can also watch their short film sharing a survivor’s story on YouTube.

Stop Loan Sharks will launch its Christmas Campaign on 21 November, with a toolkit that partners can use across social media and community channels. Sharing these messages over the winter months can make a real difference — helping people avoid illegal lenders and find the right kind of financial and emotional support.

If your organisation would like training, printed materials, or to discuss opportunities for joint working, contact Trish at Stop Loan Sharks.

Together, we can help keep Leeds loan-shark free this winter.
