People with learning disabilities are often given limited opportunities to talk openly about relationships, consent and staying safe. This can leave people without the information or confidence they need when relationships begin to develop.

Connect in the North is running a free training programme in Leeds designed to change that. The sessions focus on having good relationships, with space for discussion, questions and learning in a supportive environment.

The first session, Getting Ready, is taking place soon and is the main session being promoted at this stage.

Session 1: Getting ready

Thursday 19 February | 1:00pm–3:00pm

This session focuses on the basics that underpin healthy relationships. It will explore what makes a good relationship and what consent means, helping people to better understand their own boundaries and those of others.

The session is designed to be accessible and supportive, and people can attend on their own or with support. It provides a safe space to talk about topics that are often overlooked, but are important for wellbeing, confidence and safety.

What happens next

The Getting Ready session is the first in a series of four. People can choose to attend just this session, or continue with the full programme.

The remaining sessions will run in date order:

Session 2 – Dating
Thursday 26 February, 1:00pm–3:00pm

Session 3 – Keeping your relationship going
Thursday 5 March, 1:00pm–3:00pm
Exploring the support people might need, how to keep safe, and what it means to be a good partner.

Session 4 – If things go wrong
Thursday 12 March, 1:00pm–3:00pm
