A new Cancer Training Toolkit has been launched to help increase awareness and understanding of cancer and NHS cancer screening programmes across Leeds.

For many people, conversations about cancer can feel difficult or overwhelming. Community organisations are often in a trusted position to share accurate information, challenge myths and support people to access screening or early help. This toolkit has been developed to strengthen that confidence.

The training is designed for anyone who works or volunteers in the community. It is open to all and written at an introductory level, making it accessible and practical for a wide range of roles.

What the toolkit covers

The toolkit includes:

  • Basic information about different cancers

  • Signs and symptoms to be aware of

  • Common myths and misconceptions

  • NHS cancer screening programmes

  • Potential treatments

It also provides practical guidance for those working in community settings, including modules on:

  • Having meaningful and supportive conversations

  • Planning and delivering effective community events

Additional topics will be added over time in response to feedback and demand.

Two versions available

There are two versions of the toolkit to reflect different roles:

Users can choose the version that best fits their role.

The service prioritises the most challenged and disadvantaged communities in Leeds. Its work includes community outreach, training, social media activity and one-to-one support to help reduce health inequalities.

Leeds Health Awareness is supported by:

  • 150 digital volunteers sharing health messages online

  • 75 face-to-face volunteers delivering awareness sessions in community venues
