Shape Arts is supporting a new commissioning opportunity with UCL East Engage, inviting applications from UK-based disabled artists to create an original artwork responding to research on urban accessibility.

This commission is linked to research exploring the barriers disabled people face when navigating streets and public spaces across the UK. The selected artist will help bring this research to life in a way that is engaging, accessible and grounded in lived experience.

About the commission

The commission off

ers a £3,000 fee, inclusive of additional access and travel expenses, for the creation of a new piece of work.

Artists must:

  • be disabled

  • be UK-based

  • be 18 or over

The deadline for applications is 9am on 16 February 2026.

What the work will respond to

Over the past year, the National Centre for Accessible Transport has carried out research into the challenges disabled people experience when moving through UK streets.

The research highlights not only physical barriers, but also the emotional and social impacts of inaccessibility. This commission is an opportunity to respond creatively to those findings and help influence thinking and decision-making around accessibility.

About the exhibition

The commissioned artwork will form part of an exhibition at UCL in London. The exhibition will feature kinetic, engaging and accessible artworks that reflect the lived experiences of disabled people in the UK.

A central focal piece will anchor the exhibition, with other works contributing to a wider narrative. The exhibition will be attended by policymakers, advocacy organisations and members of the public, ensuring strong visibility for the artist and their work. Pieces will also be photographed for inclusion in the exhibition report and wider strategic materials.
