People working and volunteering in community settings are invited to take part in a free interactive workshop exploring how to better support people living with dementia.
Delivered by the Friendly Communities Project from Dementia Friendly Leeds, the Practical Dementia Training workshop will provide practical advice and strategies to help people offer person-centred support in community settings and within people’s own homes.
The session is being hosted as part of the Age Friendly Leeds Steering Group meeting and has also been opened up to Leeds City Museum staff and Age Friendly Ambassadors.
Learn practical ways to support people living with dementia
The workshop is designed to build participants’ confidence and understanding of dementia, with a focus on practical approaches that can make community spaces and services more inclusive.
During the interactive session, participants will explore:
- What dementia is and how it may affect people.
- How to provide person-centred, enabling support.
- Communication techniques and practical strategies.
- How sensory needs can affect people’s experiences.
- How to talk about memory concerns with confidence.
- Local support and services available for people living with dementia and those who care for them.
The session is suitable for anyone working or volunteering in community settings who wants to better understand how they can support people affected by dementia.
Why dementia-friendly communities matter
An increasing number of people are living with dementia across Leeds and the UK. Creating dementia-friendly organisations and community spaces helps ensure people can continue to participate in everyday life with confidence, independence and dignity.
Small changes in communication, understanding and the way services are delivered can make a significant difference to the experiences of people living with dementia and their families.
This workshop offers practical guidance that participants can take back into their organisations and communities.
