Free Workshop for Adults with Learning Disabilities
Next month, The Advonet Group’s LIFE Project is running a free, half-day workshop on Self-Advocacy in Employment. It is designed to support adults with learning disabilities in Leeds to understand their rights at work and feel more confident speaking up for themselves.
Thursday 11 December
11am – 3pm
The Advonet Group, Unity Business Centre, 26 Roundhay Road, Leeds LS7 1AB
The workshop will explore three key areas:
-
Understanding your rights at work
-
Reasonable adjustments and how to ask for them
-
Working well with colleagues and employers
It is a friendly, practical session aimed at building people’s confidence to communicate what they need, make decisions, and feel more informed about the support available.
Why self-advocacy matters
Many people find it difficult to speak up about what they want, don’t want, or need help with – especially in work settings. This can be due to a difficult situation, having a learning disability, mental health challenges or language barriers.
Self-advocacy gives people the tools to:
-
Understand how they feel
-
Communicate clearly
-
Build confidence
-
Make their own decisions
-
Work towards their goals
The Advonet Group provides a range of free tools and resources to support this, including:
-
A self-advocacy toolkit with templates for letters and forms
-
Factsheets about benefits, housing and debt advice
-
The Speak4Yourself Card – a simple card that helps people explain what support they need
-
Additional resources for autistic adults created by Leeds Autism AIM
Who the workshop is for
This session is for adults with learning disabilities in Leeds who want support to speak up for themselves at work or when looking for work. Supporters, carers and workers are also welcome to contact the team for more information.
