Transformative, Inclusive, Innovative and Collaborative!

Linda Nield, Senior Commissioning Officer at Working Age Adults Commissioning Team: “It was a very bustling event, wasn’t it? Really well attended I was pleased to see!”

From left to right is David Blythe of William Merritt Centre, Counsellor Kevin Ritchie who spoke at the event, Robert Stephens of Forum Central, Geoff Turnbull of Leeds City Council, Shaun Webster of Forum Central, Helen Brand who is the Physical and Sensory Impairment lead at Forum Central, Brendan Tannam of Leeds City Council and guest speaker Craig Grimes.

The International Day of Disabled People’s Celebration that was held on Thursday 30 November 2023 at Leeds Museum was a great success, with over 380 people from all over Leeds attending the marketplace and the accessible dance, ping-pong/cricket and circus skills activities. Our Sensory Room was also very much appreciated by those who used it, and Jodie Boyd-Ward and Craig Grimes, our Guest Speakers were both well received.

It showcased not only the great work being done by organisations that are run by and for people of many disabilities, but it also illustrated the united feeling across the city to make such a celebration possible.

Many thanks to all who made this event possible and to those who came along on the day to support and make this Leeds For All event so enjoyable!

IDODP Small Grant Events and Activities 2023

Grants were awarded up to the amount of £350 this year to organisations who reflected the theme of ‘Transformation, Innovation and Inclusion’.

Those organisations undertaking activity around this theme, celebrating the contributions of disabled people to Leeds and highlighting the barriers disabled people still face in fully participating in local civil life. Activities both closed and open to the public have been taking place from 30 November and will continue to be held until the end of January 2024.

List of IDODP Grant Holders and Funded Activities

All the grant funded activities have now successfully taken place with new audiences being reached and new activities being initiated and developed. We are currently working on the feedback that we have received from participating organisations and meanwhile would like to thank them all for supporting this valuable microfunding scheme.

Activities

Many thanks to Yorkshire Dance, Active Leeds, Yorkshire Cricket and The Feel Good Circus who all held very engaging and fun activities for us throughout the day. Participants really enjoyed trying out and joining in with accessible movement, ping-pong, table cricket and circus skills.

The activities were table cricket which is to the back of the room and table tennis in the foreground of the picture.
Cartoons: Hopefully, you would all have seen the excellent cartoon drawings that were shown on the big screens in the Broderick Hall in the afternoon. Tom Bailey had been very busy moving around and sketching different people late morning and lunchtime.
Image is a cartoon made by Tom Bailey who attended IDODP 2023. The cartoon is of Leeds Rhinos Wheelchair Rugby Captain Jodie Boyd-Ward. It says "What's important to us? It doesn't matter what barriers you face, there's something out there for you! Sport saved my life." Image is a cartoon made by Tom Bailey who attended IDODP 2023. The cartoon shows two people, one is in a wheelchair and she is holding a white piece of paper that says benefits on it, the other person is standing. In between them is a drawing of Rishi Sunak on a TV screen. Underneath the TV is a £10 note which has been cut in half and 'cuts' is written above it. The headline of the cartoon reads "Disabled people are being screwed!"

Quiet/Sensory Room

The Sensory/Quiet Room was also a welcoming place to go for some peace and calm with over 35 people going in there during the event. It was a great new addition to this year’s programme.
