About Volition
Volition is the lead provider of the Forum Central contract, delivered in partnership with Leeds Older People’s Forum. Forum Central is the collective voice for the health and care third sector in Leeds. Volition also works in partnership with Leeds City Council to produce and manage MindWell, the mental health website providing quick and easy access to up-to-date information for adults in Leeds. Volition also works very closely with Voluntary Action Leeds, Healthwatch, the NHS, Local Authority, GP Confed and other key organisations across Leeds and West Yorkshire.

Volition has a membership made up of third sector organisations of all shapes and sizes offering health and care services or supporting health and wellbeing in Leeds. Find out more about our member organisations on the website.
Our work within the health and care system in Leeds, has a particular focus on:
- Learning Disabilities
- Mental Health
- Physical and Sensory Impairment
- Communities of Interest – work with Leeds communities, across both geographical neighbourhoods and social determinants
We connect third sector organisations in Leeds with decision makers in health and social care. We influence strategic developments, policy and ways of working across health and social care. This includes links with the Local Authority, NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) and Local Care Partnerships (LCPs) in Leeds.
The team works to advocate and champion the value of the third sector. We collaborate with colleagues across the health and care system as well as the wider third sector. We aim to support, sustain and ensure the resilience and diversity of third sector health and care organisations in Leeds.
As the collective voice for the health and care third sector we strive to ensure the sector is heard. We coordinate third sector representation within the health and care system, and advocate for those who need it the most. We work with partners in the system to influence and be included in change.
The role
Are you passionate about the people and communities in Leeds, as well as the rich and diverse third sector we represent?
The Volition trustee board is the governing body providing leadership and direction for Volition. The Board meets every second month and ensures Volition meets its strategic objectives. We are seeking expressions of interest from people interested in joining our board of trustees.
What’s involved?
As a trustee you would be required to:
- Attend Volition Board meetings. Currently held every other month (2 hours with option to join either virtually or face-to-face)
- Provide support between meetings, as part of a sub- committee or specific task group.
- Dedicate around an hour a month offering feedback and input via email between meetings
- Attend Strategy day (usually one per year) to input into and develop Volition’s strategic plan
Who are we looking for?
We welcome applications from individuals with some or all of the following skills and experience:
- Third Sector insight and understanding
- Understanding of national, regional and local health systems, including Local Government, Health Service and Voluntary sector partnerships
- Experience of advocating for people from marginalised communities
- Experience of working with people who have a learning or physical disability
- Professional experience of managing the health, safety and wellbeing of employees
- Professional experience of strategic / business planning
- Previous experience of sitting on a charity board
- Leadership experience
- A working knowledge of employment law and human resource management
- Lived personal experience of mental health; disability; or health inequalities
- Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of charity trustees
