Get digging! The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) is bringing back its annual Potato Day & Seed Swap at Hollybush Conservation Centre in Kirkstall, Leeds — a celebration of seed potatoes, gardening, community and outdoor fun.

What the event is all about

A Potato Day is a seasonal gathering where gardeners and growers can:

  • buy a wide variety of seed potatoes, sourced from specialist growers

  • swap seeds and plants with other local gardeners

  • enjoy fire-baked potatoes and outdoor activities

  • take part in family-friendly woodland activities

Unlike buying potatoes from a shop, seed potatoes at this event are sold individually, letting you choose a mix of types — from early earlies and mains to salad and unusual or blight-resistant varieties.

Friends of Hollybush will be running kids’ activities, including fun games like ‘Dress the Potato’. There will also be opportunities to wander the gardens, visit the onsite café, and connect with other growers.

Why it matters

The Hollybush Potato Day is more than just a market — it’s a community celebration of growing, sharing and learning new skills. Whether you’re a seasoned grower or new to gardening, this event offers a chance to:

  • discover new potato varieties

  • swap seeds and gardening tips

  • meet people interested in local food growing

  • support TCV’s work in green spaces and community gardening

Hollybush itself is a vibrant conservation hub where volunteers help care for local green spaces, learn practical outdoor skills, and enjoy nature right in the heart of Leeds.
