A time-limited NHS vaccination programme is offering free Meningococcal B (MenB) vaccinations to eligible young people across England ahead of the 2026/27 academic year.
The programme has been introduced following recent outbreaks of MenB in England and aims to protect those most at risk before cases typically increase during the autumn. MenB is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning).
The vaccine is available from 20 July 2026 and two doses are needed for full protection, given at least 28 days apart, so eligible young people are encouraged to have their first dose as early as possible.
Who is eligible?
The one-off programme is available to:
- Young people in Year 13 (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008)
- Young people under 25 who are starting university as an undergraduate for the first time in autumn 2026
- Young people under 25 moving into residential further education accommodation or halls of residence for the first time this autumn
How to get vaccinated
Young people born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 can now book an appointment online through the NHS Vaccination and Booking Service.
Those starting university or moving into eligible residential further education can receive the vaccine at participating pharmacies from 20 July, including international students and students from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
The programme runs until:
- 31 December 2026 for first doses
- 31 March 2027 for second doses
If you’re eligible, don’t wait. Having your first dose early gives you enough time to receive your second dose before starting university or college in the autumn.
